Commercial projects / Old Mutual

Cape Town’s first skyscraper.

In 1931, we were awarded the contract to supply and install the granite for the new South African Mutual Life Insurance Society Building in Darling Street, Cape Town. The building’s façade was clad in Parys Granite from the Free State. James Andrew Clift travelled to Parys to supervise the quarrying and blasting of the stone. The project also included a series of intricate granite bas-relief friezes depicting scenes from South Africa’s history. These remarkable carvings were crafted by James Andrew Clift and his team of master stonemasons and carvers, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship that continues to define JA Clift today.

Commercial projects / Babylonstoren

Where stone and water meet.

We designed and crafted a bespoke granite dining table with an integrated water trough for Babylonstoren. Shaped by the space and engineered around the experience of staying there, the table captures the spirit of the farm and feels like it has always belonged.

Heritage sites / Rhodes Memorial

Table Mountain Granite

In 1906, we were subcontracted to supply and erect the granite for Rhodes Memorial. To ensure complete consistency in colour and grain, all 26,000 cubic feet of stone was sourced from a single quarry and delivered to the site at a rate of 2,000 cubic feet per month. The monument was constructed from Table Mountain Granite, quarried from the historic Bellevue Quarry. Today, very little remains of the Bellevue Quarry, making the granite used at Rhodes Memorial a rare reminder of one of Cape Town’s earliest and most significant building stones.

Heritage sites / French Huguenot Monument

Honouring a Legacy

The French Huguenot Monument commemorates the arrival of the French Huguenots in South Africa in 1688. Forced to flee France after years of religious persecution, many sought refuge at the Cape, where they settled in the valley now known as Franschoek. Their influence helped shape South Africa’s agriculture, wine industry and cultural heritage for generations to come. In 1943, we were awarded the contract to supply and construct the monument. Completed and inaugurated in 1948, it stands as a lasting tribute to the resilience of the Huguenots and the enduring craftsmanship of our stonemasons.
